TEA IS IN THE LIBRARY

TEA IS IN THE LIBRARY

Books Review

Lady Violet: My nanny always said, "A sweet tea is what it takes to calm your nerves." Why it should be sweetened I can't tell you.

Somebody could think that Downton Abbey - Afternoon Tea Recipes is another delightful cookbook to put on the kitchen shelf waiting to be browsed on a gray rainy afternoon. I believe that this edition, among many books dedicated to the Crawley family is pure magic. I love the cover of a typically english green and the title written in silver. Caress the fabric of which it is made with your eyes closed: you will be in the 1920s, in the estate of the Earls of Grantham and the tea, as Mr. Carson reminds us, is about to be served.

The table in the library is set with a beautiful porcelain service with delicate gold decorations. The Sheffield teapot shines and the saucers with the family crest are ready to receive scones and delicious butter biscuits. Mrs. Patmore's Victoria Sponge has just been baked. Lady Violet, sitting on the velvet sofa, waits to dispense advice and Lord Grantham's sweet Labrador waits confidently for a few crumbs of cucumber sandwich to fall on the carpet.

I confess to having had a "coup de foudre" for this TV series since the first episode back in 2011. I walked for hours in the vintage markets looking for a cloche hat like those worn by Lady Mary. I am sure that the recipes and photographs in this book really have the power to make you dream come true. The introduction tells a short story of the origins of the drink and the afternoon tea ritual and an entire chapter describes its etiquette. We are talking about a world with habits and rituals that now belong to the past and that appear like a mirage in our everyday's hectic life.

I am convinced, however, that it is important to have relax time in front of a good cup of tea and to be able to grasp the thoughts and feelings we are experiencing in the simplicity of that gesture. In this delicate and confused period I am trying to find some habits that I had abandoned. Those who follow me know my love and my deep passion for England; whenever I can, I take a moment during the afternoon for a cup of tea and in that instant I close my eyes and I see the little Tea Room in Surrey that has a very special place in my heart with happy memories.

TEA TIME!

For this reading I recommend a black tea with strawberries from Fortnum&Mason. A pleasant strawberry flavored black tea (in honor of my beloved scones served with strawberry jam and clotted cream)

The Queen- La regina di tutti noi

Elizabeth II. The queen of all

Books Review

My first thought when someone tells me about England? No doubt: Elizabeth, Her Majesty The Queen, the queen of the English, but probably the queen of all of us. I was born and raised during her reign and she remains a great source of inspiration and admiration.

It is not a coincidence therefore, that the Italian writer Paola Calvetti with her book “Elizabeth II - Portrait of the Queen” monopolized my moments of reading. I knew the writer for other publications (“Noi due come un romanzo”, one of my favorite books) and I was pleasantly impressed by her passion for Her Majesty. The author tells the story of the sovereign through the photographers who portrayed her during her very long reign and who tried, though for a few moments, to capture the woman beyond the crown.

Ascent to the throne at the age of only twenty-six, she has become a point of reference for her subjects, as well as a symbol for the whole world thanks to her self-discipline and her sense of duty and responsibility. I love everything about her: the hats, the Hermès scarfs collection, the lipsticks she always carries in her bag and the Earl Gray mug with which she begins the day.

One of the first places I visited in England was Windsor. I proceeded excitedly through the rooms of the castle looking for her face, as if she was there next to me looking at the splendid gardens that can be seen from the large windows. That place and that moment were for me unforgettable.

The writer Paola Calvetti described The Queen as a country aristocrat, a lover of dogs and horses, a woman who probably gave up the life she wanted to ascend the throne and become a guiding light for all. I remembered a photograph taken by Bruce Weber of a beautiful country aristocrat: Deborah Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, portrayed while she was feeding her chickens in a perfect evening dress. Elegance and country life. What a dream!

When Elizabeth returned from her trip to Kenya to a London in mourning for the disappearance of King George VI, Queen Mary wrote: "Today you will not only mourn the death of your father but also that of Elizabeth Mountbatten, who today dies of give way to Queen Elizabeth. The two Elizabeths will always be in conflict with each other. The fact is that in this conflict the crown must win. You must always win. "

On the days when I wake up with the paturnias (so dear to Audrey Hepburn), those few lines become essential to rediscover the sense of duty. Just like Lilibeth has done all these years.

   Deborah Cavendish, Duchessa di Devonshire

TEA TIME!

TEA TIME! Accompany the reading with a classic Earl Gray, black tea flavored with bergamot so dear to Queen Elizabeth. For a real royal touch I suggest the one of Fortnum & Mason, official suppliers of the English Royal House.

Madame Csaba e il mio arrivo a Parigi

Madame Csaba and my life in Paris

Books Review

When I walk into a bookstore, I am often attracted to images before everything else. This also happened with “Csaba Bon Marchè”, which is now one of my favorite books. (more…)

I created this blog to share my passion for books with you. I lived in England and thanks to that wonderful experience I carry in my heart the landscapes of the Surrey countryside, the books of Jane Austen and the dream of having tea with Lady Mary Crawley at Downton Abbey. Now I live in Paris where between a Ladurée macaron and an afternoon tea at Angelina's I had a “coup de foudre” for Marie Antoinette.
Welcome to my world.
